What Andorra Is

Andorra is a microstate in the heart of the Pyrenees — 468 km², no motorways, and every road in the country is a mountain road. You enter from Spain (via the CG-1 from La Seu d'Urgell) or France (via the CG-2 from Pas de la Casa), and you leave by the same two options. There's no other way in or out.

It's not a destination in itself — it's a moment. The kind of place you ride through slowly, fill up with cheap fuel, eat a good lunch above 2,000m, and carry on into France or back into Spain with a story to tell. Most riders who skip it on a Pyrenees trip regret it. Most riders who stop wish they'd stayed longer.

The Passes

Port d'Envalira
2,408 m — highest road in the Pyrenees

The main pass between Andorra la Vella and France. Paved, wide, and spectacular — long sweeping hairpins with views into both countries. Even in summer the temperature at the top drops to single digits. The road stays open year-round but snow can close it November through April without warning.

Coll d'Ordino
1,985 m — quieter northern loop

The back way through the Ordino valley — narrower, less traffic, and far more character than the main CG-2. If you have 90 minutes, this loop adds the best of what Andorra's side roads offer: forest tracks, stone villages, zero trucks.

La Comella Loop
~1,200 m — short circuit around the capital

A quick run south of Andorra la Vella on roads that feel completely forgotten given how close they are to the duty-free strip. Narrow, wooded, almost no traffic. Good for killing 30 minutes while waiting for the fuel queue to clear.

Ideal Possible Avoid

Port d'Envalira sits at 2,408m — snow is a real possibility from November through March, and the pass can close overnight even in May. June through October is the reliable window. August is peak tourist season with fuel queues and traffic in Andorra la Vella, but the mountain roads are still empty once you're off the main CG-2. October is exceptional: no crowds, zero traffic on the side roads, and the larch forests are turning gold.

How to Fit It Into Your Route

Practical

⛽ Fuel

Andorra has no VAT, so fuel is significantly cheaper than Spain or France — typically 15–25% less. Always fill up before leaving. There are several stations in Andorra la Vella; August queues can be long so stop early in the day.

💶 Currency

Euro, no conversion needed. Cards accepted everywhere. Andorra is duty-free so gear, electronics and alcohol are all noticeably cheaper — worth knowing if you need a new jacket or helmet mid-trip.

🛂 Border

Andorra is not in the EU or Schengen area. There are nominal border checks entering from both Spain and France — in practice it's usually a slow roll-through, but have your ID or passport accessible. Customs limits apply on fuel and goods leaving.

🚬 Smuggling

Andorra's economy was built on it. Spain and France had tobacco monopolies — Andorra didn't. The passes you're riding were the original smuggling routes, used by passadors on foot, horseback and eventually motorcycles, with the Civil Guard in pursuit. Every year during Carnival, Andorra stages a comedy play about it. The smugglers always win.

🏕 Overnight

Andorra la Vella has plenty of hotels at reasonable prices (no VAT means accommodation is cheaper too). Canillo and Ordino are quieter alternatives higher up. Wild camping is not permitted — Andorra is small enough that there's no real wilderness to disappear into.

🌡 Temperature

At 2,408m the top of Port d'Envalira is cold even in July — pack a mid-layer regardless of how warm it was in Spain. The valley floor in Andorra la Vella sits at ~1,000m, so expect a 10–12°C drop from the capital to the summit in the same ride.
