Why Adventure Riding in Ireland

Ireland's reputation is green fields and main roads, but beneath that is a network of bog roads, forest service tracks and mountain passes that rewards riders willing to leave the tarmac. The Wicklow Mountains outside Dublin have proper gravel access to remote high terrain. Connemara in the west is bog country — wet, exposed and serious. Donegal in the northwest is raw Atlantic — wind, rain, and tracks that see few motorcycles all year.

What makes Ireland distinct is the unpredictability of the weather and the quality of the hospitality. Prepare for rain on any day. What you get in return is wild, open terrain that feels untamed despite the island's small size and dense population on paper.

The Regions

Wicklow Mountains · 600–1,000 m

The accessible high terrain nearest Dublin. Passes through moorland and forests with good gravel access. Merging upland and lowland farms creates a patchwork of tracks. An accessible introduction to Irish mountain riding.

Connemara · 400–700 m

Bog and wild western landscape. Terrain is exposed and wet. The Twelve Bens dominate. Routes here are longer and more exposed than Wicklow, and often harder to navigate in poor visibility.

Donegal Highlands · 500–700 m

Raw Atlantic coast and moorland. The most remote section of Ireland's offroad network. Weather is serious, tracks are rough, but the sense of emptiness is absolute.

Ideal Possible Avoid

Ireland rides year-round in theory but practically from May through September. Spring and early summer give the best chance of dry tracks — the country is wet, and bog roads turn to mush after heavy rain. July and August are warmest but midges are relentless in Connemara and Donegal. September is often the most pleasant month: cooler, quieter, and the colours turn.

How to Fit It Into Your Route

Practical

⛽ Fuel

Dense in the east and south; gaps up to 50 km in west Connemara and north-west Donegal. Fill up in any town before heading into the glens.

💶 Currency

Republic of Ireland uses Euro (EUR). Cards work almost everywhere — cash rarely needed but useful for farm shops and remote stops.

🛂 Border

No border formalities with the EU. Northern Ireland (UK) is open; no checks between Republic and North on minor roads.

🏕 Overnight

B&Bs are abundant and affordable — a standard fixture of Irish touring. Westport, Donegal town and Kenmare are solid hubs for regional exploration.

📶 Signal

Good 4G on main routes; notable black spots in the west coast peninsulas and deep in the Wicklow forests. Download offline maps.

🌡 Temperature

Mild year-round, rarely above 22°C even in summer. Nights around 10–15°C. Expect rain almost any day — layer and pack waterproofs.
