Country Overview

Guyana is the smallest country in mainland South America after Suriname (215,000 km²) and the only English-speaking one. The population concentrates on the Atlantic coastal plain — Georgetown is the colonial wooden-architecture capital. The southern interior is dominated by the Rupununi savannah (a vast grassland inland from the Pakaraima mountains) and the dense Amazon rainforest, with Kaieteur Falls (one of the world's most powerful by volume) hidden in the central highlands.

ADV-wise the headline ride is the Linden-Lethem road — 700 km of dirt connecting Linden (50 km south of Georgetown) to Lethem on the Brazilian border. It's been called one of the great Pan-American dirt rides and gives access to the Rupununi savannah and an overland route into northern Brazil. Caveats: the road condition varies wildly with the wet season; tourist infrastructure beyond Georgetown is sparse; carry significant extra fuel and water.

The Zones

Atlantic coast & Georgetown
Coastal capital + Demerara/Berbice

The populated coastal strip. Georgetown's wooden St George's Cathedral is the world's tallest wooden building. The coastal road connects east to Suriname (Corantijn ferry) and west to Venezuela. Year-round rideable but humid.

Linden-Lethem road
700 km dirt north-south

The legendary dirt traverse. Starts at Linden (paved from Georgetown), then 700 km of dirt through dense rainforest, the Pakaraima mountains, the Rupununi savannah and on to Lethem at the Brazilian border. Best Sep–Apr (drier); wet season makes some sections impassable.

Kaieteur & central highlands
Pakaraima mountains · Kaieteur Falls

The interior highland zone — Kaieteur Falls (226 m, one of the world's most powerful by volume) is the centrepiece. Most access is by small plane from Ogle airport rather than by road; some dirt tracks reach the area edges from the Linden-Lethem road.

Guyana has two wet seasons (May–Aug and Nov–Jan) and two drier windows (Sep–Nov and Feb–Apr). The Linden-Lethem road is rideable in the drier windows; wet-season floods can make it impassable. Coastal year-round 26–31°C with high humidity. The savannah interior gets hot — 32°C+ daytime in dry season.

Regions to Plan Around

Practical

Stations dense around Georgetown; very sparse in interior — carry significant extra fuel for the Linden-Lethem road. Currency is Guyanese dollar (GYD); USD widely accepted. Visa-free for most western passports (90 days). Vehicle import (TIP) at borders. Lodgings in Georgetown range from hostels to colonial hotels; interior accommodation is basic — Lethem has guesthouses, the Linden-Lethem road has occasional ranch stays. Cellular coverage strong in coastal zone, sparse-to-none in interior — satellite messenger essential for the Linden-Lethem ride. Pack mosquito protection.
